Manchester City vs. Wolverhampton Final Score 2-0; City Return to Winning Form

Wolves Offer Little Resistance

It has been a while since Manchester City have won a Premier League game; they broke that drought tonight with a commanding win against last-place Wolverhampton. While the final score of 2-0 was somewhat expected based on the difference in skill level, the overall performance of both teams as well as the major calls throughout the night were very entertaining.

Premier League. England – Match Day #23.

Manchester City 2 : 0 Wolverhampton

Erling Haaland Not Playing — Marmoush Scores Early

Prior to the match the biggest story line was that Manchester City’s top scorer, Erling Haaland would be rested for the first time this season. He is normally always ready to go for every league match he has played in this year, however, after being goal-less with open play shots for the past eight matches across all competitions, he was able to take a well-timed break. His only goal of 2026 to date was a penalty shot against Brighton.
Omar Marmoush stepped in for Haaland, and just five minutes into the match he scored his first-ever Premier League goal for City. He ran down the line and timed his run perfectly, then touched the ball in the box and finished cleanly. Marmoush had only previously played 205 minutes of Premier League action prior to the match due to injuries, playing in the Africa Cup of Nations and competing with teammates for spots in the lineup.

Referee Makes Unusual Call – But Sticks by Decision

There was a relatively uncommon occurrence in English football when referee Hallam declined to award a penalty to Manchester City in the middle of the first half. The referee used video review (VAR), but ultimately decided not to award a penalty even though the ball had hit the arm of a defender of Wolverhampton. This decision was consistent with how referees are generally deciding to give handball penalties in the Premier League recently. A handball penalty is typically awarded in the Premier League if either the contact appears to be intentional, or the player is in an unnatural position.

Oscar Siemenyo Doubles the Lead — Just Before Halftime

Before the whistle blew at the end of the first half, City doubled its lead. Oscar Siemenyo collected the ball at the edge of the box, switched it to his stronger foot and curled a smooth finish into the far post, giving Wolves keeper, Sa, no chance. It was Siemenyo’s first Premier League goal for City, although he has previously found the net in the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Low-Key Second-Half Action

The second half saw little action, and when Haaland entered the game late, he had little to no influence. On the other hand, Siemenyo showed some good form and came close to scoring again, hitting the crossbar with a powerful strike. The one area where Ederson’s replacement, Donnarumma, struggled was with the ball at his feet; he also flailed out and missed a simple punch, but the Wolverhampton players lacked the quality to capitalize on those mistakes. Doku suffered a bad studs-up tackle to the heel but stayed in the game until the end. Gehi played his first match for Wolves at center-back, and although City rarely put serious pressure on him, they could not find an opening. Wolves’ best chance of the night came in the 87th minute when a headed attempt clattered off the top of the crossbar and sailed over the goal.

League Standings Implications

City narrowed the gap with the current Premier League leaders, Arsenal, to 4 points. Tomorrow, however, Arsenal will face a difficult test at the hands of their local rivals, Manchester United. As for Wolverhampton, they continue to sit at the bottom of the standings and are now 10 points behind safety. At this juncture, a discussion about their chances of avoiding relegation is nothing short of wishful thinking.
